UNT is now using file storage technology to archive files in storage tiers. This technology automatically moves old and infrequently accessed files to a long-term cloud storage location which frees up local storage resources. A great advantage of this technology is that it works automatically behind-the-scenes and does not change the way files are accessed.

What do I need to know?

The storage archiving technology works in the background without changing the way you access your files. Just navigate to your existing folders and files as usual. You will need to create a local copy of any of these files if you need to make modifications to any of the files that have been transferred to the storage archive.

What files are moved to the storage archive?

Files older than 5 years and have not been modified in the past 5 years are moved to the storage archive. Again - please note that you still access those files in the usual manner.

How do I access my files?

Files in the storage archive are accessed using the same methods you would use to access other files in UNT storage directories. Usually, there is a shared drive or directory mapped on your workstation such as the "S: Drive".

How can I tell if a file has been moved to the storage archive?

Files that have been moved to the storage archive are represented by a "symlink" version of the existing file. You can identify these files are follows:

  1. Files in List view
If your files are displayed in List or Details format, the file "Type" will be ".symlink" and the icon will have a small arrow overlay.

  2. Files in Icon view
If your files are displayed in icon or thumbnail format, the file icon will have a small arrow overlay on the bottom left of the icon.

How do I edit my files?

Files that have been moved to the storage archive cannot be modified directly. You need to open the file as usual, go to the application menu, such as "File->Save As" and save a local copy. Then, open that local copy of the file, make your changes, and save the file to your shared drive as usual.
